Why I love being “Casually Fit”

I’m what I like to call Casually Fit.

Here’s what I mean by that: I don’t put any stress on myself to eat a certain way, look a certain way, or exercise a certain way.

Sure, I might have moments where I’m like “damn…did I really eat that whole box of Mac & Cheese?” but those moments are rare and I no longer enter the shame/guilt spiral of eating a lot of food like I used to (which would then only cause me to eat MORE food!).

Eating “clean” isn’t really on my radar because what I’ve come to learn is that our bodies naturally gravitate towards the healthier stuff once we stop all the restriction and deprivation and screwy mindset of dieting.

I’ve found a really good balance of eating the cookies and eating the salads and being fine with it.

In terms of exercise, there have definitely been times where I’d mostly just walk Candy, teach my 2 spin classes, and that was it and it actually felt really good to just ease up on things a bit.

I put so much pressure on myself for YEARS to eat a certain way, exercise a certain way and look a certain way, and truthfully, I got sick and tired of it, so I decided to let my body be the guide, and I’m still getting better and better at it every day.

Sometimes that looks like crushing a spin class and lifting weights, sometimes it looks like going for a 20 minute walk and taking a nap.

Or eating a huge salad with lean protein and drinking lots of water, sometimes it looks like eating mac & cheese with a glass of wine (classic combo, I know!).

My goal isn’t to be a fitness model or have a six pack. My goal is to enjoy my life and not have food and fitness run the show like it used to.

Yes, I love food and I love fitness, but my life no longer revolves around it. I’ve found that once we take the pressure off ourselves to look and eat a certain way and just start living life in a way that feels really good, amazing things happen with our body

We don’t have to worry about it as much, we don’t have to obsess, we don’t have to diet, we don’t have to stress. We can just be, in our own imperfect way.

I wanna share my own nutrition/fitness guidelines with you so you can get a better idea as to what my healthy lifestyle looks like. Not so you can compare, but so you can see how I live my life and how I coach my clients to live theirs, too:

  • I don’t count or measure anything
  • I eat to feel physically & mentally satisfied
  • I eat until 80ish% fullness
  • I prioritize protein & veg at most of my meals
  • I drink at least one fruit & veg smoothie almost every day
  • I use my energy, clothes and progress pics (when I remember to take them) as a way to gauge my eating
  • I pay close attention to hunger, fullness and cravings 
  • I eat something sweet every day
  • I never, ever stress over food
  • I lift weights 2-3 times per week
  • I do cardio 2-3 times per week
  • I walk for at least 20 minutes almost daily (more when I have my dog)
  • I go to bed and wake up at the same time most days of the week

And that’s it. Nothing crazy.

Notice how I don’t say I get my smoothie in every single day? Or that I eat protein and veggies at every single meal?That’s because as much as we try, we’ll never nail this stuff 100% of the time, so I cut myself a little slack knowing that being a little less perfect makes me a whole lot more consistent, and I give myself permission to do that stuff most days.
